Harmony Day March 21

EVERYONE BELONGS
CELEBRATING CULTURAL DIVERSITY

Harmony Day is held every year on 21 March to coincide with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.  The continuing message that ‘everyone belongs’ encourages people to participate in their community, respect cultural and religious diversity and foster a sense of   belonging for everyone. Harmony Day is our nations day to celebrate Australia’s diversity – a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home.  It’s about community participation, inclusiveness and respect—a time to reflect on where Australia has come from, while also recognising the traditional owners of this land. Cultural diversity is in Australia’s national interest, building our productivity and enriching our lives. Harmony Day provides an opportunity to celebrate and recognise the benefits and potential that cultural diversity brings.  Australia’s cultural diversity remains one of our greatest strengths and is at the heart of who we are as Australian’s.

Did you know?
•          Over the last 70 years seven million migrants have made Australia their home.
•          Almost half of Australians were born overseas or have a parent who was.
•          People from more than 200 countries make up our Australian community and over 300
languages are spoken in our homes
•          Apart from English the most common languages spoken in Australia are Mandarin, Arabic,
Cantonese, Vietnamese, Italian, Greek, Tagalog/Filipino, Hindi, Spanish and Punjabi

Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Day and all Australians are encouraged to wear something orange on 21 March to show their support for cultural diversity and an inclusive nation.
